Bengal actor held for ‘theft’; court asks, no victims?

Actor Rupa Dutta was arrested from the International Kolkata Book Fair venue in Bidhannagar after several purses containing Rs 65,760 in cash were found from her possession, police said on Sunday.

She was on Sunday produced before a local court and sent to police custody for a day. The court questioned police why no eyewitness statements were recorded or no victim complained about the alleged theft.

Dutta has been arrested under IPC sections 379 (theft) and 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) after sub-inspector Jayanta Nath Saha of Bidhannagar North Police Station filed a complaint.

Saha, who was on duty at the fair, came across the purses when he intervened during a commotion on Saturday evening, police said. The actor was found with alleged purses containing cash. Police sources said Dutta was also seen throwing some purses in a bin.

“Search several purses containing Rs 65,760 was found from her upon search. When asked about it, she failed to give any satisfactory reply,” said a senior police officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

In 2020, Dutta had accused film director Anurag Kashyap of sending her inappropriate messages on Facebook. Later, it was revealed that she was chatting with another person whose first name was Anurag.
