Officer and other driver killed in crash following chase on I-25

A Santa Fe police officer and one other person has died in a crash following a pursuit on I-25 near Santa Fe. According to Santa Fe Police, a kidnapping was reported at 11:14 Wednesday morning where a male armed with a knife carjacked a female driver at the Rancho Vizcaya Apartments. Santa Fe Police later found the vehicle near Sawmill Road and St. Francis Drive. Police say they tried to stop the vehicle and that’s when the vehicle fled. Police say during the chase the suspect drove onto I-25 at St. Francis traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. Soon after, the suspect got on the northbound lane and began southbound. During the pursuit, a crash happened at Mile Marker 286 south of the exit at Old Pecos Trail. The crash involved four vehicles. Those vehicles included two Santa Fe Police patrol units, the fleeing vehicle, and another driver not involved in the chase. One Santa Fe Police officer and the driver not involved in the chase died in the crash. Police are actively searching the area looking for the suspect involved in the chase and crash. The female driver who was carjacked was taken to the hospital. State Police say I-25 is closed. Due to the investigation and search for the suspect in the deadly crash and chase prompted New Mexico State Police to issue a shelter in place for the Santa Fe Waldorf School.
