Olathe East High School resource officer, administrator shot

As investigators sort out a shooting that injured three people Friday morning at Olathe East High School, authorities have identified the wounded school resource officer.Officer Erik Clark has been a school resource officer for seven years and has spent 15 as a police officer.Clark radioed for help just after 10:30 a.m., saying he had been shot and injured and that an administrator had been shot.The officer also reported that the suspect, a student, had been shot. Police confirmed the suspect had been shot by the school resource officer.No other students were injured.KMBC 9 News learned that a school administrator pulled the student, who was a senior, from class this morning after receiving a tip that the teen had a gun in his backpack.They went to the administrator’s office. The student refused to open his bag. That’s when the assistant principal called for the school resource officer. When SRO entered the office and that’s when the shots were fired.A spokesperson with Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the hospital received three adult male victims. Two of the three victims were released from the hospital Friday afternoon. The third victim remained in critical condition. The school was immediately locked down after the shooting. Students were kept in classrooms until police could secure the building. Later, students were escorted out of the building single file and taken by bus to California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School.”Um, it was insane. We didn’t know what was going on,” junior Paige Schmideskamp said.”There were a bunch of rumors, but we never truly knew what was, like, correct and we were just in lockdown for two hours and didn’t know what was right or what was wrong,” said junior Allison Schmideskamp. “Our principal went over the intercom and told our teachers to look at their emails immediately, like drop everything. Our teacher said we were in lockdown and she went and locked the door. That’s all we knew at that point.””We didn’t know how long we were going to be in the classroom, so our teacher had some snacks and stuff and she tried to keep us calm. She did a good job,” said Paige Schmideskamp.Parents who heard about the shooting, in some cases from their children inside the school, were told by district officials initially to head to Family Video on South Black Bob Road where they waited for students to be released.”It’s hard but it’s much better with technology. The fact that I can still have him text me. I’ve been texting, like, ‘Are you still OK? Are you still safe?’ so that makes it easier, but it, yeah, it’s still scary,” parent Andrea Schneider said.”I’m going to meet him at home and get a big big hug. Being a senior, he’s not always willing to give me those freely but I think today he will,” one mother said.Agents with the Kansas City field office of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were dispatched to Olathe East High School to assist police.The Johnson County Multi-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team is investigating the shooting. Olathe police said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.Counseling services were made available for students and staff at California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School until 7 p.m. Friday. The superintendent said the district would have counseling services available for them next week as well.

Agents with the Kansas City field office of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were dispatched to Olathe East High School to assist police.

The Johnson County Multi-Jurisdictional Officer Involved Shooting Investigation Team is investigating the shooting. Olathe police said the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

Counseling services were made available for students and staff at California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School until 7 p.m. Friday. The superintendent said the district would have counseling services available for them next week as well.
