Olathe police, parents and the community were trying to make sense of a violent morning at Olathe East High School that ended with three people being shot.A police spokesman said officers received a report just after 10:30 a.m. of a shooting in a principal’s office. The school’s resource officer radioed saying he had been shot and injured and an administrator had been shot.The officer also reported that the suspect, described as a student, had been shot. Police later confirmed the suspect had been shot by the school resource officer.No other students were injured.A spokesperson with Overland Park Regional Medical Center said the hospital received three adult male victims. One person was in critical condition, another was critical but stable, and a third was listed as stable.Hospital officials did not give the ages of those who had been shot.Shortly after 3 p.m. the hospital provided an update saying two of the three victims have been released from the hospital. The third victim remains in critical condition. Officials say both the school administrator and police officer are the victims who have been released. The school was immediately locked down after the shooting. Students were kept in classrooms until police could secure the building. Later, students were escorted out of the building single file and taken by bus to California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School.”Um, it was insane. We didn’t know what was going on,” junior Paige Schmideskamp said.”There were a bunch of rumors, but we never truly knew what was, like, correct and we were just in lockdown for two hours and didn’t know what was right or what was wrong,” said junior Allison Schmideskamp. “Our principal went over the intercom and told our teachers to look at their emails immediately, like drop everything. Our teacher said we were in lockdown and she went and locked the door. That’s all we knew at that point.””We didn’t know how long we were going to be in the classroom, so our teacher had some snacks and stuff and she tried to keep us calm. She did a good job,” said Paige Schmideskamp.Parents who heard about the shooting, in some cases from their children inside the school, were told by district officials initially to head to Family Video at 12708 South Black Bob Road.The district said parent-pickup students and walkers would be taken to California Trail Middle School on West 133rd Street. Bus riders will be taken home on buses being dispatched from Pioneer Trail Middle School on West 127th Street in Olathe.Officials said school administrators and law enforcement officers were working to help students get back to their parents and guardians as soon as possible.Student drivers will be released in a staggered fashion and will be escorted to their vehicles.Special education bus riders will be sent home on buses from Olathe East as normal.Agents with the Kansas City field office of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have been dispatched to Olathe East High School to assist police.Counseling services will be available for both students and staff at California Trail Middle School and Pioneer Trail Middle School until 7 p.m.The school district said in an email that all activities are on as scheduled except for those that were set at Olathe East. Coaches and sponsors will communicate any changes to their students/families if needed.
