A woman died overnight as the result of a fire at a home in the Marstons Mills village of Barnstable.The fire department received a 911 call Sunday from a woman who saw the fire at 118 Lakeside Drive. The woman said she tried to alert the occupants of the home.Officials said their investigation determined that the fire originated between the basement and the first floor at the front of the home. The home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the ranch-style home just after 8 p.m., officials said. Video showed flames shooting from the roof.Firefighters from several departments helped battle the flames. After they were extinguished, heavy damage was visible to the roof and walls of the red home. The State Fire Marshal’s office confirmed Monday that one person died as a result of the fire. The fire does not appear to be suspicious, officials said.“I want to extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones as they confront this tragedy,” said Fire Chief Michael J. Winn. “As we investigate the exact cause of last night’s fire, I also want to remind everyone in the community that working smoke alarms and home escape plans are some of the most valuable tools in surviving a fire.”The victim, who has not been identified, is the third person do die in a fire in Massachusetts in less than one week. A 4-year-old girl died in a fire Thursday, and a woman died in a fire in Fitchburg on Friday.
