OPD identifies suspect found dead after hours-long standoff

Omaha police have identified the suspect found dead after a nearly eight-hour standoff on Western Avenue. OPD says 48-year-old Michael Jones was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound. OPD says the standoff started after a call came in at 11:21 a.m. Saturday about an armed domestic disturbance involving a man and a woman at 7105 Western Ave. The 911 caller reported the man had fired at least one shot inside the house. Police say when officers arrived, they spoke to a woman who said her husband, Jones, had barricaded himself in the detached garage behind the house. OPD says several crisis negotiators spoke to Jones over the phone for several hours. Shortly before 7 p.m., officers heard two gunshots from inside the detached garage. Law enforcement made a tactical entry and found Jones dead from an apparent gunshot wound. A gun was found near Jones. No officers fired their weapons and no one else was hurt. The Omaha Police Department offered their condolences to Jones’ family and friends. The standoff and death are being investigated by OPD’s officer-involved investigations team, along with the Nebraska State Patrol and Bellevue Police Department. The case will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is done, per state law.
